On Thursday, Apr. 16, National Science Honors Society hosted a competition in which students built devices to try and keep an egg safe. After school, four groups of students came together and strategized on how they can keep an egg safe from a long fall.
Senior Vincent Walker, who is the NSHS president, said, “We gathered people to this event to see who can use their knowledge to keep their eggs safe.”
They started in the cafeteria, where they used different provided materials to make the eggs’ protection. They then went outside to the top of the bleachers and dropped their eggs to see if what they built could protect the egg.
Senior Andrew Straley said, “We were given many different types of material, and we had to use them to make something that can keep our eggs safe.”
They repeated the egg drop multiple times using different strategies seeing which one would be most effective. After multiple attempts, they finally found the most effective way that completely kept the egg safe from the large drop.
In the end, the group of Nathan Sears, Benjamin Malinowski, and Jake Phillips won the competition with their main materials being a balloon and parachute.
Senior Nathan Sears said, “It was a really fun competition and I am glad that we came out in first place.”
