The date was Aug. 19, 2024, the first day of school. I was not super excited to be back in school, per usual. But there was one thing I especially missed over the summer: cafeteria cookies.

I ran to the cafeteria line. I love those cookies more than anything, but I was caught by surprise. There was a change in the cookies, a whole new recipe. Just from my first look, I knew they were not the same anymore. The gooeyness and chocolate were dormant compared to the cookies from my past three years.

The first bite was disappointing. The cookies were not bad by any means, but they simply could not compare to the old cookies.

There was an immediate revolt during fourth period lunch. I heard chatter running through the cafeteria:

“What is this garbage?”

“Did they switch the recipe?”

“I’m never buying a cookie again!”

I could tell the poor lunch ladies felt the wrath, but there was nothing they could do.

The complaints continued throughout the year. I witnessed countless cookie fans force themselves to eat the new cookies, just wishing they were the same as last year.

On March 25, 2025, students walked into the cafeteria to a surprise. The old cookies had returned.

The lunch ladies set up a big sign with balloons, and the student body loved it. The line to get my cookie took around five minutes, but every minute was worth it.

I can tell you firsthand, the taste of that cookie after a long drought was exceptional. I could not wait to tell all of my friends with later lunches that they had returned. On this day, Brother Rice lunch was restored, and I can now end my senior year with the classic cookies.
