On Friday, Apr. 24, Rice Relays broke away from its normal tradition this year and moved the annual track and field showcase from Brother Rice to Evergreen Park High School.
While the venue of this event changed, the meet featured a great field of competitors from many different Chicago area teams. The event was held Friday and brought together programs such as St. Rita, St. Laurence, DePaul College Prep, Fenwick, Leo, Mt. Carmel, and Evergreen Park.
There were many performances that took place on this newly renovated track. St. Laurence runners Joey Philip and Matt Williams led the track in the sprints with Williams winning the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.95; Philip secured the 2nd top finish with the same time of 10.95.
However, Brother Rice did not shy away from a challenge; the 4×100 meter team secured the silver with a time of 43.42. Individually, seniors Emeir White and Dan Speski both placed in the top ten of the 100 meter dash, clocking in at 11.11 and 11.31 seconds, respectively. Sophomore Carlton Gordon III was able to get 3rd in the 400 meter dash with a time of 53.26.
While normally the Relays take place at the Brother Rice Campus, the officials were able to move this large scale event to our neighboring facility. The move did improve the competition of the meet; it helped serve as a key midseason mark for Catholic League and other programs in the area.
