On Sunday, Nov. 3, two grateful Crusaders participated in the Tinley Park Park District’s annual Turkey Trot 5K. Seniors Stephen Devine and Carter Mosel raced in festive attire. Devine wore his fuzzy turkey onesie, and Mosel dressed as a dapper pilgrim.

The race took place in the heart of Tinley Park’s Vogt Woods. Participants enjoyed running or walking through the neighborhood in their Thanksgiving-themed outfits.

Mosel said, “Racing through my hometown of Tinley Park every year is something that brings the community together. Everyone had so much fun, and they all loved the costumes.”

Although Carter wanted to have a good time, his anticipated race against his fellow Crusader was certainly the main focus. After talking to a few outside sources, it seemed this race would be neck and neck.

Senior Ryne Collins had a lot to say about the two. Collins is a former Tinley Park Turkey Trot participant.

“I don’t know who’s going to win this one; they’re both very good runners,” said Collins. “Although Carter’s costume is a little tight on him; Steve might pass out in that outfit!”

From the starting line to the finish line, this race was indeed back and forth. Mosel had the lead for most of the race until Devine sneakily took the lead heading for the finish line. With a couple yards from the finish, Mosel sped up to Devine.

Mosel gave it his all, but it wasn’t enough to match Devine. Your Tinley Park Turkey Trot champion: Stephen Devine.

Devine said, “Carter got a little too cocky at the beginning. He didn’t think I’d catch up to him. It was just like the tale of the tortoise and the hare. After that race, I made a lot more room for my Thanksgiving meal!”

Even though many people were walking or running, there were plenty of other ways to get involved in the event. Residents of Tinley Park supported the trotters by cheering them on and handing out cups of water and Gatorade.

More spectators cheered participants on as they crossed the finish line, while other activities took place. Food and drinks were provided, along with a variety of games and activities throughout the park.

This Turkey Trot was certainly one to remember. I just cannot wait for next year’s race!
