On Monday, Nov. 11, the students of Mother McAuley and Brother Rice gathered for a Veterans Day prayer service. The students went to Mother McCauley’s gym for the service, along with some family members and friends.
The highlight of the service was sharing the floor with many veterans who risked their lives fighting for our country. Their bravery and courage speak volumes about the strength of the human spirit.
We heard speeches from two veterans, including former Brother Rice principal Jim Antos. Mr. Antos served in the Vietnam War and told us about his experiences as a young man in the military.
Senior Dan Terri said, “Hearing Mr. Antos’ speech was really interesting. His description of events felt so real, and I felt like I was right there with him. I am very grateful and lucky to have heard a speech like that.”
The students were lucky enough to hear another speech from a veteran, who is also a graduate of Mother McAuley. Lt. Cmdr. Dr. Ashley Shenberger, spoke to the students about her experiences in the Navy. She was happy to be back home at Mother McAuley.
Senior Patrick Hermanson said, “When I heard about the decorated career of Dr. Shenberger, I was amazed. It was cool to think that someone who grew up in the same place I did has done so many great things for our country. She is an inspiration to all of us.”
Senior Matt Phelan was the master of ceremonies for the service. He has special ties for Veterans Day and was the perfect man for the job. Matt’s brother Kevin serves in the military, and his uncle served as well. Veterans Day is always a special day in the Phelan house.
Phelan said, “Veterans Day holds special significance for me and my family, as both my brother and my uncle serve/have served in the military. This day is a time to reflect on those who have made the ultimate sacrifice so that we can have the freedoms we have today. I am forever indebted to these men and women, and I deeply appreciate their service to our country.”
The Veterans Day service was an enormous success, and a great tribute to America’s heroes. The Standard extends a special thank you to all of our veterans. Your service and heroism will never be forgotten.
