Four Brother Rice High School students were recently recognized as recipients of the prestigious Ella French Scholarship, an award established to honor the legacy of Officer Ella French and support high school students with educational expenses.
This year’s recipients include Aiden Murillo (Senior – St. Daniel the Prophet), Dominick Vicari (Junior – Mt. Greenwood), Ryan Kinney (Sophomore – Mt. Greenwood), and Brian McDevitt (Sophomore – Cassell). Each student received $2,000 to help offset costs such as tuition, school supplies, and transportation.
The Ella French Scholarship, administered by the Chicago Police Foundation, is awarded annually to students who are either children or dependents of current, retired, or fallen Chicago Police officers, or who are actively involved in Chicago Police Department youth programs. Applicants are evaluated on academic achievement, attendance, and community involvement.
Officer Ella French, in whose honor the scholarship is named, was deeply committed to serving her community. Known for her dedication to children and animals, she tragically lost her life in the line of duty on August 7, 2021. The scholarship ensures that her legacy continues by supporting students who embody the values she championed.
The recipients and their families were honored at the 3rd Annual Ella French Scholarship Award Luncheon on Sunday, September 14, 2025, where the awards were formally presented. The event celebrated the students’ achievements and the lasting impact of Officer French’s life and service.
The Chicago Police Foundation encourages eligible students to apply each year, keeping Officer French’s memory alive while providing meaningful support for local youth pursuing their education.
