The Brother Rice soccer team dominated against the St Rita Mustangs on Senior Day, winning the match 8-0.
Brother Rice improved to 12-3-2, while St. Rita fell to 2-13 on the year. The Crusaders also improved to 3-1-1 in conference.
There are 11 seniors on the Brother Rice soccer team that all took the field for what may be one of the last times playing at Gary Little Stadium.
The ceremony was very nice, as all the seniors’ families received photos and flowers. All of the seniors’ names were listed along with their achievements and where they are going to college.
Senior Luke Gordon said, “It was great that all the seniors had the opportunity to play one last time at home.”
The Markulin Cup was far less competitive than the Edmund Rice and Pulaski Cups. This is due to St. Rita’s best player Rory Minogue being injured. Also, the Mustangs were already out of playoff contention so they played a lot of freshmen and sophomores. This resulted in the team being heavily inexperienced and outmatched. The Crusaders won the Markulin Cup for the fourth year in a row.
Senior Liam Greene said, “I wish that the game was a little more competitive but I’m happy that we won.”
Senior Angelo Piech had a hat trick along with goal contributions by seniors Salvador Perez and Gabriel Yungaicela.
The Crusaders at the time of this publication will have already played their final regular season game against DePaul. They managed to edge out a win against DePaul last year.
The Crusaders will then begin their playoff campaign. They are expected to be seeded very highly in their first round of the playoffs and will most likely be playing against Washington High School, who they beat earlier this year 2-0.
Senior Jimmy Gricus said, “We need to begin to get ready for the playoffs, I think this game was good for us to get in good form before it.”
