Throughout our modern era, sports have been one of, if not the most popular things in society. Throughout the rough times of poverty, tragedy, and war, sports have been there to relieve a burden off the shoulders of the world. The evolution of fandom has impacted the sports world forever, and this is especially displayed in the Brother Rice community.
The Crusader Crazies have built a legendary legacy over the years. The group is not just a bunch of students getting together to watch a game. It has become an opportunity for brothers to support one another through something that they all love.
Whenever you are in the vicinity of the Crazies, the BRotherhood is felt. Whether it be loud chants that surround your ears or the rumbling through the stands that make your body vibrate. When the Crazies are around, their presence is felt.
Coy Workman, a Brother Rice senior who is highly active in the Crusader community, said, “The Crazies mean a lot to me; I’ve been here for four years and being able to carry out a tradition like this is special.”
To hear words like that from a senior who knows the importance of brotherhood goes to show the legacy that has been left from previous generations. That type of mindset does not develop overnight. Countless years of togetherness account for this type of mentality.
Manuel Uriarte, senior middle line-backer as well as one of the captains of the Brother Rice football team, said, “The Crazies are a huge advantage for us on the field. They always bring the energy, and they motivate me to go out there and fight for the brother next to me.”
That’s what it’s all about – having something to believe in and fight for. That’s the dynamic that the Crazies bring to the stadium.
Sports in the Crusader community are more than just a game. They bring us together. They unite us as a family. In times of need, we turn to each other to find peace in the little things. These things we take for granted now, but will look back on for the rest of our lives to come.
